Exercise: Look at a magazine cover. What can you tell about the type of magazine it is; what kinds of articles it contains; who is likely to read it? Why?

This is a magazine about the top 100 influential people at the time. Dwayne Johnson being one of them. It contains articles of other celebrities explaining who they think the most influential people are. People who are likely to read it are people who like The Rock, because he is on the cover and catches people's eye. Other people that will read it include those who are curious about who the most influential people are and why.

The visual elements, such as figure, costume, colour, pose, typography. Layout

There is one man, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the cover. It is a closeup of just his face and he his looking directly at the camera. Since it is a Time Magazine there is a red border along with a gradient of blue to yellow behind The Rock. The print consists of yellow, black, and white words.

Linguistic elements – the title, lexicon, use of ‘teasers’

The TIME title is on top of The Rock at the top of the page. The words "The 100 most influential people" are in white on the right of the page next to his face. Slightly smaller beneath it is Dwayne Johnson's name, with an even smaller author. There are also four other names of influential people below and also smaller (with authors), these are technically teasers about who else is going to be talked about in the magazine.

Lifestyle – what kind of lifestyle is ‘on offer’? How is it offered?

There is no kind of lifestyle 'on offer' it is simply explaining celebrities opinions on who they believe is influential.

Representation – how are people and places constructed and presented through these technical elements?

This makes Dwayne Johnson seem very powerful which is good for conveying the message that he is influential.

Mode of address – how is a particular audience being addressed by these elements? How is a potential reader encouraged to see her/himself as the addressee?

The reader is encouraged to see these influential people and understand why they are influential so that they could potentially learn from them and become more influenced by them with reason.

Rhetoric – what is the potential reader being persuaded to buy/accept? How?

The reader is being persuaded to understand why these people are influential and accept that these people are very influential to people all over the world. They do this by having people's favorite actors or singers (Ex: Beyonce, Leonardo DiCaprio) to write these articles or take about who they think in influential. If someone you already look up to believes that somebody is influential, you are more likely to believe the same.
