Critical Reflection: Question 6

Discuss the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences by international or global institutions.

Targeting national audiences can be more difficult to make a connection, while targeting local audiences makes it more difficult to appeal to more people. If Disney, a conglomerate company, wanted to release a documentary or film, their main focus would be get a majority of people to watch it. This can reduce the impact the film had on the audience since it would have to be relatable to everyone. On the other hand, a local and independent production company in the UK, such as Aardman Animations, could release a film that relates to the issues or events going on local to that area to get the people's attention and make them understand what's going on. The main issue about this is that you can very rarely have both a connection with relatable content and have viewers from everywhere.

The conglomerate companies, such as Disney, tend to focus more on global distribution, whereas independent companies focus on local distribution. This is also why you see large companies on large streaming platforms that everybody uses. Very few independent companies get their films on these streaming platforms and if they do it is often a shorter contract with shorter reach. Independent production companies can use more traditional ways of marketing and promoting their product by putting up posters, handing out fliers, or even a local commercial on television. Conglomerate companies take larger action since they have more funding and can pay for widespread ads in the media. I feel as though it would be difficult to be an independent company and have a global reach, but it is certainly not impossible, they just have to find an issue that everyone relates to in order to have a good connection with people globally.
